Hello, Sprouts. Today is Thursday, October 24th, 2024. Today is also the feast of St. Anthony Mary Claret. I'm Kelly Mantone, the founder of accepting the gift, a ministry which supports the

host on the Catholic Sprouts podcast to talk to you about some of my favorite saints, all of whom just

happen to have disabilities. Today, I want to tell you the story of Saint René Guppio. Renée lived in

France in the 1600s. As a young man, he studied to become a surgeon

before deciding to join the Jesuit order and become a priest. However, while he was still a novice,

he became deaf and lost his hearing. And the Jesuits told him that because of this,

he could no longer become a priest.

But even though he couldn't become a priest, he traveled to what is now Canada with the Jesuits to use his skills as a surgeon in the new world.

He arrived in Quebec and offered himself to them as a lay assistant, promising to obey the Jesuit

superior and work without salary.

He spent two years at a hospital run by sisters using his medical training to help injured

Native Americans.

But what Renee really wanted to do was work more actively towards converting Native Americans who had never heard of Jesus.

When Father Isaac Yogues arrived in Quebec, he needed volunteers with medical training, and so Renee was recruited to go with him.

They set out in canoes on the St. Lawrence River with a large group of missionaries and Hurons.

Hurons were one tribe of Native Americans living in this part of the world, and many had converted

to Christianity. René and the other Jesuits were going to minister to this new but growing Catholic
