| 0:58.3 | Alexius lived in the 1800s in Korea at a time when it was illegal to be a Christian. |
| 1:04.9 | Christianity had only arrived in Korea shortly before he was born and was primarily spread by lay people who had learned |
| 1:12.5 | about it while traveling in other countries. These people brought religious books back into |
| 1:18.2 | Korea and translated them so more people could learn about Jesus. The first priests arrived |
| 1:24.4 | secretly by sneaking over the border into Korea in the 1840s. So it was dangerous to be |
| 1:30.5 | a Catholic in Korea. You could be arrested or killed for practicing your faith or hiding a priest |
| 1:36.1 | in your home. The government of Korea thought these new Christian beliefs undermined their authority |
| 1:41.6 | and wanted to get rid of Christians no matter what. |
| 1:45.2 | All in all, it's believed that 8 to 10,000 Koreans were killed for their faith during five |
