| 0:46.2 | 23rd. He was born Angelo Roncalli in a small northern Italian village. He came from a |

| 0:56.3 | of tenant farmers who worked in vineyards and cornfields |
| 0:59.5 | and tended cattle. |
| 1:01.2 | He was the fourth of 13 children. |
| 1:04.1 | As he would rise through the ranks of the church, |
| 1:07.5 | he would never forget his humble upbringing |
| 1:10.3 | in that small northern Italian town |
| 1:12.4 | in a large family. An interesting part of Pope John the 23rd's life was that he served in the |
| 1:20.3 | First World War. In 1915, as a priest, Father Roncalli was drafted into the Italian army, |
| 1:27.0 | where he would serve as a medic and then as a chaplain for soldiers. |
| 1:30.8 | He was well respected in his roles there and helped many men in the midst of the horrors of war. |
| 1:36.9 | This would later influence him as Pope as he would write about harmony and peace in some of his papal letters, |
| 1:44.1 | talking about the need to avoid war and |
| 1:47.1 | the terrors that come from it. Pope John 23rd famously opened up the Second Vatican Council, |
| 1:54.1 | a council in the modern world which sought to better understand how the church could proclaim |
| 2:00.3 | the good news of salvation to modern man. |
