0:24.1	Today is Friday, September 20th, 2020.
0:28.4	Today we remember a number of very brave, heroic, remarkable martyrs in Korea.
0:37.3	Chief among them is Andrew Kim Tagon, and he died in the year 1839.
0:44.5	Now, the story of the Catholic faith in Korea is just simply remarkable.
0:50.2	The Catholic faith was brought to Korea by lay people.
0:54.6	Some of them had been out in other Asian parts of the world.
0:58.4	They had encountered Christianity.
1:00.4	They brought back the Bible and the Catholic teachings.
1:04.2	Lay groups of people studied and grew in the faith.
1:07.1	And it was many, many years after this until the first priest, missionary priest,
1:12.7	arrived in Korea, and he was astounded to find the faith already there with vibrant,
1:20.3	fervent believers.
1:22.8	Unfortunately, as the church began to grow, it met persecution.
1:27.5	Andrew Kim Taigon was the first native-born Korean to be ordained a priest.
1:34.0	And so at the time, in Korea, the hierarchy, the king and the queen, they held onto their position
1:41.9	because of their ancestors.
1:44.0	In Korea, they worshipped their ancestors and just knowing exactly who your family was
1:49.9	and if they were important was very powerful.
