Hey there, sproutsouts. Today is Wednesday, July 31st, 2024. Today is also the feast day of St. Ignatius of Laola. St. Ignatius of Laola is a Spanish saint who lived mostly in the 1500s, and he has quite the story. He was a soldier who was very proud and very vain. He spent his early years just trying to get glory on the battlefield. That all changed one day when he was in a battle and a

cannonball crushed his leg. He had to be carried home to his family's castle where he was

laid up in bed for months upon months. In fact, at one point his leg healed, but it healed

incorrectly. So they had to break it

again and he was stuck in bed again. That whole time, he begged his family for something interesting

to read. He was hoping that they would bring him a romance book, but instead, they brought him the Holy Bible and stories of saints.

He was not thrilled about this, but he was so bored that he eventually read these books.

And as he laid in bed, he had a tremendous conversion. When he was finally well enough to get out of bed, he took

all of his swords and armor, and he went to a Marian shrine. And he went there and prayed and

fasted for several days. And afterwards, he left all of that behind. He left his old identity as a soldier questing for glory behind and instead became a soldier for Jesus.

Years later, he and a couple of his friends founded the Jesuit order.

And he is remembered today as the author of the of the spiritual exercises that
