Today is Wednesday, September 27th, 2020.

Today is also the feast day of an incredible French saint named St. Vincent

DePaul.

He lived at the end of the 1500s beginning of the 1600s.

Now, perhaps you have heard of St. Vincent de Paul because of some sort of charitable organization or store that is in your area.

And that is a great way to remember this saint.

He cared deeply about the poor, about helping them, raising money for them,

creating hospitals and orphanages to help them. But St. Vincent-Tupal was not always focused on the

poor. He grew up very poor on a farm, and he decided to become a priest simply so that he could

have a more comfortable life.

He hoped to get a position serving the queen and have a very luxurious life, which he actually did get.

But then, as a young man, as a young priest, he had a deep conversion.

This happened in part because he was captured when he was shipwrecked once by

Morish slave traders, and he worked for a couple years the grueling work of a slave until he

converted his master, who set him free, and he returned to France dedicated to helping the poorest of the poor.

There are many great stories about St. Vincent de Paul. He helped galley slaves. Now, a galley slave is someone

who was chained into a boat, and they were working the oars at the bottom of this boat all the time with very little rest.

And the only way that they could go and visit their family is if someone came and subbed in for them.
