Summary

Our Patron of the BE A SAINT KIDS CLUB this month, St. Josephine Bakhita, is an incredible example of forgiveness. And yet, it's hard to fully understand what forgiveness is and how we practice forgiveness. So, this week join us as we discuss what forgiveness is NOT, what Jesus taught about forgiveness, the steps to offering forgiveness, why we also have a reason to forgive and how God forgives.

This week the Catholic Sprouts Podcast is sponsored by the Augustine Institute and their new WORD OF LIFE SERIES, curriculum designed to not only teach the faith, but also enable children to become part of the New Evangelization. To find out more, head here: https://www.wordoflifeseries.org/

Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Thursday, February 16th, 2020. This week we were talking about forgiveness. But first, please join me in praying the Anima Christi. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen. Soul of Christ sanctify me. Body of Christ save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the

side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. Good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds, conceal me. Do not permit me to be

parted from you. From the evil foe protect me. At the hour of my death, call me and bid me come to you

1:05.4

to praise you with all your saints forever and ever amen.

1:17.0

So this week we've talked about what forgiveness is not, especially that it is not a feeling.

1:22.5

We talked about the parable of the talons and the three steps to offering someone forgiveness,

1:30.3

to recognize the hurt, to count the cost, and then to decide to release this person from the debt that they owe us. Now, today we're going to look at the ultimate act of forgiveness that has

1:37.3

ever been done on this earth, and that, of course, is Jesus as he hung on the cross. His words, some of the final words he said,

1:46.1

well, before he died, offer us a powerful insight to forgive no matter what it is we're holding

1:53.3

on to, to forgive that situation. So if you remember, as Jesus was dying on the cross,

2:00.7

there was a lot going on. One of the criminals on

2:04.3

one side of him was just shouting horrible things at him. Another criminal was looking to him for mercy,

2:11.7

which he granted. There were high priests riding by and mocking him. There were Roman soldiers gambling, doing all sorts of

2:20.4

things. There was a lot going on. And even the fact that he was there crucified, betrayed by his

2:27.5

friend, denied by another friend, handed over by the leaders of the Jewish faith, right? There is a lot. And what does Jesus do?

2:38.4

He says, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. So he offers forgiveness,

2:46.1

despite the fact that he is utterly, completely innocent, that he only wanted to come to love and save us.

2:56.6

But listen to the reason why.

2:58.9

For they know not what they do.

3:02.8

So in these words, Jesus is saying, like, they don't fully understand, right?

3:10.3

They maybe don't recognize that I'm the Messiah.
