on Catholic Sprouts where every Saturday we discuss the art of Dragon Seine.

Today is the memorial of St. Bernard of Clairvaux.

What is that, you asked? Is your St. Bernard dog named after St. Bernard?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is no.

But that doesn't make sense because yes is a longer answer than no.

Let me explain. St. Bernard dogs were indeed named after a monk named St. Bernard,

but it was St. Bernard de Methon in Switzerland who created a hospice in the Swiss Alps,

which used St. Bernard dogs to rescue travelers lost in the snowy mountains.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux was born in Siena in 1272,

and he went on to become an abbot of a monastery he founded, even though he had very poor eyesight.

He lived a life of heroic virtue, serving others and contemplating God, and his monks saw him as a father,

electing him as an abbot 27 years in a row. He had a deep devotion to Mother Mary. He's the one actually wrote the popular prayer we call the Memorari, putting complete

honor and trust in Mary as mother to intercede for us, which is a great segue to continue our series

on the Ten Commandments, because we are on the Fourth Commandment, which says,

honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord God is giving you.

This is the first commandment we see with a promise. If you honor your mom and dad, things are going to go

well for you, it says, we owe much gratitude and respect to our mom and dad, who sacrificed so much for us.

A few years back, I was sitting in my office one day, and several of my kids came in together,

almost like a committee or a union, coming to voice a complaint. And they said, we have a question.

I said, what's your question? And they asked, Mother's Day is in May, Father's Day's Day's in June,
