What really black people wanted was resources to help prevent crime. We wanted the sorts of

resources that a lot of black mayors like Mayor Brandon Scott out of Baltimore or Mayor Brandon

Johnson, or even in New York City when we were looking at

producing reports in some of the advocacy work that I was doing that talked about all of the

benefits that come from investing in crime prevention, like violence interrupter programs,

like ensuring that young people have a safe place to play after school.

You know, like how white kids get.

When they get safe places to play, imagine how much wonderful our lives would be if our kids didn't have to just play on a stoop in front of day blocks where some things might happen that are not necessarily going to be in their best interest because of the way poverty is structured in our society. But I remember a whole lot of people in 2016 said they were not going to vote for Hillary Clinton because of the crime bill. They said they weren't going to vote for Joe Biden in 2020 because of the crime bill and the
