Some countries are shifting to the 4-day workweek. The four day work week is a step that we're seeing, that for society is actually happening. We see countries like New Zealand, Spain, and in Iceland a study just came out where 2500 people did a four day workweek. Kickstarter is switching over to it. Even small community colleges like Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Michigan switched over to it five years ago and they are saving millions of dollars on air conditioning costs in the summer. So we see that there are all these business applications for the 4-day work week. Iceland Study Details It was a multi-year study of 2,500 people in tons of different industries. It wasn't just automotive workers or teachers, it was across the board in a number of different sub-sections of society. They found that productivity was up in four days. They found that creativity and happiness was up. An unexpected outcome was that their health outcomes were better. They were less stressed and less anxious. Suggested Resources Book: The War Of Art by Steven Pressfield App: n/a Life Challenges In 2012 it all hit the fan at once. My daughter had heart surgery and as soon as the doctors said she was good and healthy, two weeks later I was diagnosed with cancer. My best friend's wife had breast cancer, my grandma died, it was just one of those terrible years. We all have one at some point unfortunately. I was working at a community college at the time, full time. I had my side counseling practice and had just started a podcast, The Practice of the Practice podcast. So I had all these things going on, and this little baby girl who'd just had heart surgery. I started to think about my forty-hour a week job. Really, it wasn't one of those jobs that I hated. I had autonomy, I had influence, my boss was amazing, so it was even harder, because it paid well and I had a great job. I could have stayed there for my whole career. But the central question I asked myself was, ‘would I rather stay and never know what I have inside of me, or would I rather leave and potentially fail. And to me that was such a central question. I decided I'd rather leave and potentially fail and if I failed I could always come back to the counseling world. So I left my full-time job and started Practice of the Practice podcast. Over the years I found that I was saying the same thing over and over. It was around time and the best use of my time. At a certain point you need to stop taking out the trash. To have someone else do that so you can focus on those higher level things in your business and in your life. today with Joe Sannick. So, Joe, are you in mindfulness mode today? Oh, I sure am. Bruce. Thank you so much for having me.

0:56.6

Yeah, it's my pleasure. It's great to have you here. So what does mindfulness mean to you?

1:03.0

Yeah, you know, for a long time mindfulness, you know, being trained as a counselor and

1:07.0

psychologist was something that we were teaching people, but I wasn't really practicing.

1:11.4

And, you know, it's interesting how it takes some tough things in life to really get you into

1:16.4

more mindfulness. And so for me, unfortunately, it wasn't a practice that I was doing that would

1:22.5

prep me for difficult times, but it was in reaction to difficult times. But then I think once I started a mindfulness

1:28.5

practice and was able to add meditation and kind of different ways of being more present,

1:34.5

for me, I would really define it as, you know, being in the moment now as much as I can. To me,

1:40.7

I see it as these waves that come in and out where I have thoughts and crazy things going on in my life. And then it's like, wait, I'm not really being, you know, very mindful here. I need to pay attention more. Even when I think about playing with my two daughters, there's seven and ten, you know, to be in the moment with them. And then, of course, my brain goes to, oh, I could work on this in my business. Oh, what am I going to do this weekend? I need to work on the fence. And then it's like, no, I'm playing with these two delightful girls that actually want to be with me right now in a few years. They're not going to want to be with me. So just taking that breath and then coming back and then being patient with myself and realizing just how much it goes back and forth. Well, you're right.

2:22.5

It's so important to take the time and spend with your children and just do what's important.

2:26.9

You've written this new book, and it's called Thursday is the New Friday.

2:32.8

And the whole idea is that, well, creativity equals productivity.

2:36.9

And you can get way more done in far less time than you actually think once you get creative. And I know that one of the quotes about this book is that

2:43.4

there is no more important book that should be read than this right now. And that's by Pat Flynn.

2:49.1

So that's a pretty powerful quote.
