This first cast is called Downturn Right of Passage.

I'll just tell you years ago, I never dreamed I would write this cast

or that it would become so popular among so many people. I took it for granted that everyone knew it and that was my fault.

And when I mentioned some people at a conference, this is probably 10 years ago,

they were astounded that they had never ever heard of it. And it's just a good reminder that

sometimes the things we take for granted ought not to be taken for granted. At a high level,

downturn right of passage teaches you the important career idea that if I look

at your resume and I see that you have never gone through an entire downturn and back up to the other side to the upturn with a single employer, there is a concern that if I hire you, you will leave during the next

downturn when perhaps I need my best people, all hands on deck. There are certainly reasons in this, again, unprecedented

time for you to consider changing employees. And I won't fault you for doing that.

Employers may simply go out of business.

Employers may fundamentally have to change going forward.

But we felt like it was an important time to say,

you needed to understand what the impact on your career might be if you

made a change.

That said, five years from now, I'm not sure anybody would fault anybody for leaving at a time.

Again, of unprecedented, that's the third time I've used that word,

unprecedented business, economic, and even yes societal changes. So this is downturn right of

passage. We're re-releasing it for your benefit. I hope you enjoy it. Here we go.
