happening in america what's going on and before we actually get into what convict leasing is. So I think it's important to

understand just how devastated the South was after the Civil War, because that's kind of the

context. So during the Civil War, there were 300,000 white men in the South who lost their lives fighting the Civil War.

And 300,000, that's like a huge loss on its own, but you have to put that in the context of,

like, that was a fifth of white male adults in the South.

Wow.

In addition to losing a fifth of their workforce of the white men, the South also lost

half of the capital in the South was the slaves who gained their freedom, the enslaved people

who gained their freedom. So half the GDP, half of the economy in the South just went away.

And then 300,000, so a fifth of the white men died.
