I don't know what most white people in this country feel,

but I can only include what they feel from the state of their institutions.

Now, this is the evidence.

You want me to make an act of faith, risking myself, my wife, my woman, my sister, my children, on some idealism which you assure me

in America, which I have never seen.

Welcome back to another episode of Black History for White People, a podcast where we educate,

resource, and challenge white people about black history.

I'm Brad, and on today's show are my co-host Katina and Garron.

Today's topic is Convict Leasing.

We'll begin this episode with a quick recap on what is happening in American history during this time.

We'll define convict leasing and then begin to dive into the effects and evolution of convict leasing into our

current times we hope you enjoy the discussion okay garen paint the picture for us what's

happening in america what's going on and before we actually get into what convict leasing is. So I think it's important to

understand just how devastated the South was after the Civil War, because that's kind of the

context. So during the Civil War, there were 300,000 white men in the South who lost their lives fighting the Civil War.

And 300,000, that's like a huge loss on its own, but you have to put that in the context of,

like, that was a fifth of white male adults in the South.

Wow.

In addition to losing a fifth of their workforce of the white men, the South also lost

half of the capital in the South was the slaves who gained their freedom, the enslaved people

who gained their freedom. So half the GDP, half of the economy in the South just went away.

And then 300,000, so a fifth of the white men died.
