Summary

Colin Jackson’s been in the public eye since he was a teenager, he’s had a hugely successful career as a sprinter and hurdler with some incredibly impressive world records. In this episode Colin explains race start-line tactics, the ‘dip’ at the finish line and how it can all go very wrong with a touch of over-confidence. Jenni and Colin take a look at some of the real issues affecting athletes heading out to Tokyo for the Olympic Games and touch on the pressure of being at the top of your game. They also discuss the negative impact of all that training and the upcoming medical treatment Colin now requires. Throughout the episode Colin offers great tips from his years of experience not only as a phenomenal athlete but also as a top trainer and coach. A truly wonderful listen with a lovely man, a brilliant coach and someone who remained unbeaten for almost 3 decades. Enjoy

And today's guest, well, it's someone we all know, whether you followed his career when he was actually competing or you've seen him

0:22.0

commentating or perhaps you were so young that Dancing on Ice 2021 was your first introduction.

0:28.7

Well look, he's a household name. He is also a blooming speedy runner. He is Mr. Colin Jackson.

0:36.9

Hello. Hello. Hello.

0:43.4

Hello, hello, hello. I love that introduction. I was guessing myself. I was thinking who could it be?

0:54.9

I was saying you were Mr. Colin Jackson. I was going to say CBE, but then I would have to go. Would I have to say you've got MBE, OBE, CBE? You just, you need the knighthood now and then that would make it much easier.

0:59.9

Do you know what's always interested in that? I kind of get a little bit embarrassed when people mention them. I don't know why I get embarrassed, but I kind of just kind of go, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I do have those.

1:05.5

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I wouldn't. I'd be, I'd be adding them on at all opportunities.

1:14.4

It's so great to have you here in the Rompore Drunk Club.

1:22.3

I mean, I've just known you as an athlete for as long as I can remember and as long as I've watched sport, you know, on the telly.

1:26.4

And you've been brilliant. You've represented Wales, Great Britain.

1:29.5

You specialised in the 110-meter hurdles,

1:34.5

and you're blooming good at it. Do you look back and think, especially, you know, when you look back at all those Olympics, does it feel like it's so long ago now? Does it feel like a distant memory?

1:39.4

Oh yeah, very much. Because I feel when I, you know, I retired in 2003. And when you think about that's like

1:46.5

nearly 18 years now. Well, it will be 18 years. And that's nearly as long as I was competing

1:52.7

as a professional athlete. I've been retired. So when you look back and in that sense, it is

1:57.7

sometimes a little bit mind-blowing. And when people, you know, I mentor runners

2:02.4

now and they talk about what I was doing in my career, et cetera, et cetera. And I say, hang on a minute,

2:06.7

I really got to think a lot, because I've got to go back a long way to start thinking about what I

2:12.0

was doing. But one thing I remember, my coach always saying to me, you know what, Colin, you said to me,
