Summary

Today’s guest is Nicole Cardoza, founder of Yoga Foster. I couldn't be more excited about Nicole's mission to bring more movement into classrooms across the country. Her approach is innovative, too -- Nicole's background in tech inspired her to create a platform that offers yoga curriculum and teacher trainings to classroom teachers. It's a scalable idea and one that empowers classroom teachers to bring mindfulness breaks into their classrooms throughout the day. I love the idea of yoga being incorporated into the school day in a seamless way. Nicole also opens up about her recent experience doing a cover shoot with Yoga Journal and how important it was for her to speak out about a surprise cover survey they did after the fact. I ask her how she handled a situation that was shaming, ignorant, and racist and turned it into an opportunity to help others.

Hey everyone, I'm Andrea Ferretti and this is episode 158 of Yoga Land.

0:09.4

Today my guest is Nicole Cardoza.

0:11.8

Nicole is the founder of the nonprofit company Yoga Foster and Yoga Foster has created an online platform for classroom teachers to learn to teach yoga and mindfulness to their students and to incorporate it

0:25.0

into their classrooms in whatever way works for them.

0:29.0

Nicole has a background in tech and she started working on Yoga Foster as a project while she was still working her full-time job.

0:38.8

So it's taken years for her to develop this whole platform. She is now traveling around the

0:46.1

country, meeting with schools and person to promote yoga foster and to promote yoga and she's also about to embark on a bus

0:56.8

tour from Utah to Baltimore starting in August. I also want to mention that Nicole's goal with

1:06.2

yoga foster is to as she calls it close the wellness gap. So in educational settings it's been long talked about that there is an

1:15.1

achievement gap for kids who are at low income and underserved schools and

1:19.5

schools now aim to help close that gap so that kids in those schools still live up to their full potential.

1:29.0

And Nicole is trying to do the same thing with wellness and it's really just something I've been reflecting on since I spoke to her which is that you know for the most part those of us who do yoga and I'm generalizing but many of us who do yoga and have access to all that the wellness industry has to offer, we have

1:47.2

privilege and we have access that perhaps we take for granted. I'm sure that I do. And so building a company like Yoga Foster that gives back and is really aimed at bringing wellness and yoga to populations who need it where it's not always

2:04.3

accessible is really exciting to me so I just applaud her so much to learn from her

2:09.5

and the organization and enjoy the interview with Nicole.
