Summary

Ravi opens with a deep dive into the unfolding chaos in Los Angeles, where the Trump administration has deployed federal agents and Marines to respond to the ongoing immigration protests. He breaks down what we know so far, why the deployment of federal troops may set a dangerous precedent for civilian law enforcement, and what else is at stake from a legal and constitutional perspective. Antón Barba-Kay, author of A Web of Our Own Making, then joins the show to explain how Mexican drug cartels have become social media influencers. Ravi and Anton discuss cartel propaganda, TikTok as a national security threat, and the flattening of culture in the digital age. -- Leave us a voicemail with your thoughts on the show! 321-200-0570 Follow Ravi at @ravimgupta Follow The Branch at @thebranchmedia Listen to more episodes of Lost Debate on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-lost-debate/id1591300785 Listen to more episodes of Lost Debate on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7xR9pch9DrQDiZfGB5oF0F

Welcome to The Lost Debate, a show for political eclectics. I'm Robbie Gupta. In a little bit,

0:04.9

we're going to hear from Anton Barbara Kay, who is a distinguished fellow at the Center on Privacy and Technology

0:09.4

at Georgetown Law and the author of a web of our own making. He wrote a piece recently in the Atlantic

0:14.2

all about how drug cartels are becoming social media influencers. So we talk about that topic. We talk a

0:20.0

little about Elon versus Trump. And then we just

0:22.2

also talk about like this constant topic that we've been discussing on this podcast around the

0:26.8

flattening of culture and the lack of distinction in the era of the rapid, rapid dissemination

0:33.5

of new content on the internet. So we'll get to that.

0:38.1

But before we get there,

0:39.8

there's obviously a lot of questions posed by what's happening in Los Angeles today.

0:46.4

I'm recording this Tuesday, June 10th at 1145 a.m.

0:50.6

And there's so much I don't know about what's happening over there.

0:54.9

So I want to be really careful because I think it's in these moments that people say things that they tend to regret.

1:01.2

I think of June 2020, for example, how people were characterizing the protests slash things that would be on protesting during that period of time.

1:09.8

I think there was the whole Kyle Rittenhouse situation that I think took some time to figure out. And those kind of like,

1:17.1

like whatever they were, like skirmishes slash in that case, like a death on the streets,

1:22.9

alleged murder on the streets of our towns. It's always hard to know in real time what's going on right now.

1:30.4

And some of this is related to some of the stuff I talked to Anton about,

1:33.2

which is you're often relying upon people sharing videos online.

1:38.9

And sometimes you're like, well, when was that video?

1:41.2

Was that today?

1:42.8

Was that yesterday?
