Christy Turlington Burns was driven to help new mothers around the world

because of her own life-threatening complication delivering her first child.

I came across really staggering information, which was that the complication I experienced

was the leading cause of death for women and girls around the world.

So she took action and she founded Every Mother Counts, a nonprofit dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for everyone.

Today, her mission is an urgent one here in the United States and abroad.

I think what you're finding is that last women are getting the prenatal care early enough on,

which then allows you to recognize signs in advance and kind of sets you up for a more successful

delivery and outcome. Plus, how her father's death from lung cancer was the turning point

that led to her activism and why she says her confidence comes from her education, not from her

supermodel looks. Here's my conversation with Christy Turlington Burns.

Christy, thank you for being here. Thank you for having you. And thank you for all you do for all

of us moms, which we will talk a lot about with every mother counts. But let's begin a little bit

earlier on in your life and how you got here because many people think supermodel when they hear Christy Turlington-Burons.

I no longer think that because I know you and I know what you're doing now,

but you grace, you know, a thousand plus magazine covers.
