We are looking at the book of First Peter. We are in chapter 2 and Peter has introduced a topic that's going to carry throughout

the next chapter and a half at least and it's all centered around the word submission. In our day and age, submission

sometimes is framed in a way that it comes across as a dirty word. It comes across as an

oppressive word or a demeaning word when we say that someone is to submit to someone else.

You see freedom in our minds often means

we are to be liberated from submission to other people.

And in the context of slaves and masters,

yes, that has happened in our culture

and thank God that it did.

Because slavery itself was a very unjust practice and it was morally wrong to

treat other individuals as property.

And yet, Peter, one of the apostles who lived in a time of slavery and actually lived among slaves himself.

In fact, Peter in a sense was a slave not to one individual but underneath the heavy hand of Rome

...
