Summary
Charlotte Mensah has been styling hair for three decades and is one of the biggest names in hair. She is a hairstylist, business owner, artistic director and brand creator who joins me on the podcast to share the story of her incredible career in the beauty industry.
There was so blueprint to success for anyone aspiring to make a career in hairdressing back in the 80s, let alone success in black hair, which is what makes Charlotte’s story especially compelling.
There have been challenges and struggles along the way, but as Charlotte says ‘sometimes your path just doesn’t run straight’ and so she adapted and persevered.
In this conversation @charlottemensah and I discuss:
- Why she originally wanted to pursue a career in finance.
- The importance of knowing what your dream looks like.
- Putting in the hard work, staying focused and waiting for ‘your time’.
- The importance of being original.
- The value in mentorship and why it’s so vital to give back when you can.
- Why hairdressing is spiritual for her.
- Helping women with textured hair find themselves and their identity by embracing their natural hair.
- How her book Good Hair is the ultimate education in black hair.
- Why struggles are part of any story, the trick is learning to the enjoy them and see them as a vital part of the process.
