So on January the 13th, the first of a lot of important elections this year took place.

But they happened in a place that only a dozen other states recognize as a country, namely Taiwan.

And Lai Ching-Tir, also known as William Lai, who's been Taiwan's

vice president since 2020, is now the president-elect, and for the third election in succession,

the Democratic Progressive Party has held onto the presidency. So far, so dull. But in the run-up

to the election, tens of thousands of words were written by hundreds

of commentators around the world about these elections. So what we want to do in this podcast

is to explain the background to the election and talk about the implications of the results,
