All right, folks. Welcome back to the backcountry hunting podcast. Today we're going to talk about bullets. This is part two of our discussion on cartridges and bullets. The first thing I want to do is address a couple of questions

0:15.2

that were directed to me via my Instagram feed. One, J.J.N. 11.

0:22.8

About the 6.5 by 284 Norma.

0:25.8

He said he has a 6.5 Creedmoor and he's looking for something with a little more velocity

0:30.4

and asked what my thoughts are on the 6-5 by 284 Norma versus the 6.5 PRC.

0:36.7

This is a really good question and something I probably should have addressed in part one of cartridges and bullets because the 6-5 by

0:47.8

284 Norma is the ballistic twin of the 6.5 PRC and it's a much older cartridge. It's almost to that

0:57.2

veteran status because it's been around as a wild cat for a long time and

1:01.9

then Nausler legitimized it by submitting it to

1:05.6

Sammy if I'm not mistaken and announcing it in their line of factory ammunition.

1:11.3

So ballistics are basically for all intents and purposes

1:15.8

identical to those produced by the 6.5 PRC. So why would I suggest the modern cartridge, the 6.5 PRC, over the 6-5 by 284 Norma?

1:29.0

First, I've got a 6-5 by 284 that I love. I've loaned it to a couple buddies that have got

1:35.1

really good use out of it on some long-range shots on on deer. The last time I was

1:41.1

with my good friend Clay Wagstaff he's a renowned landscaped artist

1:46.2

when he took a really nice mule deer buck at if I remember correctly 523 yards one shot perfectly centered through the vitals dropped on the

1:56.5

spot great cartridge I love it the reason the 6.5 PRC is superior is that it fits inside of a short action magazine box even

2:08.9

with long high BC aerodynamic bullets. The case neck is a little bit shorter than the

2:17.2

65 284 and so it leaves a little more length in front of the case to see those really long bullets without contacting the end of the magazine.

2:27.1

My 654 by like many hunters that reload it for optimum performance is built on a long action. It was worth it to me to carry

2:38.9

the extra half or three quarter of an inch of action length and the weight and everything else involved

2:45.4

to gain that magazine box length so that I could shoot really long high-b c bullets.
