Canada, our neighbor, our best neighbor to the north, an election underway right now,

and the candidates couldn't be more distinctly different. I welcome

Mary Anastasia Grady. She is the America's editor and columnist for the Wall Street Journal

editorial page. Looking at Canada, as we go through the turmoil of tariffs and Liberation Day,

there is an election to decide the future, and the government, the new government,

will be in power for some years, long after tariffs are spelled with 1F instead of 2.

So we come now to who the candidates are.

I know something about Pierre Poldevra, the conservative.

The new face is Mark Carney.

Why he's new is that he's never been a politician before. He's a central banker. Mary, a very good evening to you. The Liberal Party

is the party that has won three consecutive elections and now looks to win its fourth. What do we

need to know about his policies before he became the leader of the liberal party?

Good evening to you, Mary.

Well, good evening, John.

Yeah, Mark Carney won the Liberal Party nomination to lead the party in March.

And so if the liberals win the April 28th election, he will be the prime minister.

That's how it works in a parliamentary system.

And so he's basically a former advisor to Justin Trudeau, but he also in his own right has been quite active in environmental causes.

And this is important for Canada because Canada is a resource economy, has huge amounts

of oil and gas, and can use and leverage those resources to build wealth and make Canadians better off.

The liberals, however, over the last nine and a half years, have not done that.
