Hello again, I'm Warren Omni. The U.S. and Iran both say officially they don't want war, but incidents with the potential to trigger armed conflict are raising troubling questions. Who really bombed those oil tankers in the

Persian Gulf? Was the unarmed American drone shot down by Iranian warplanes really over Iran's

airspace or international waters? The leaders of both countries are talking tough, and they're

surrounded by influential hawks, ready to find reasons for military

action. All this has increased the prospect of a false flag, a mistake, or a misrepresentation

that could lead to disaster, and new technology makes it more difficult than ever to separate

fact from fiction. We're talking today about fake news and real

warfare. Let's start with the recent exchanges of threats and provocations between Iran and the

United States. Robin Wright is a familiar voice to our listeners. She's been with a New Yorker since

Give us a bit of a list, if you will, of the recent incidents and the verbal exchanges that have occurred between the United States and Iran.

There have been a sequence of incidents over the past few weeks.

There were four tankers just outside the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman,

which were sabotaged.

Then another two tankers sabotaged.
