Hello and welcome back to Sociology 101.

0:13.8

Today we're going to be talking about double think.

0:16.8

What is double think?

0:18.1

It's a word that was invented really by George Orwell, and it typically is used in more political circumstances and situations, obviously.

0:28.2

But I think there is a, let me turn down this fan over here, kind of a theological double think, if you will, in regard to Calvinism. And we've talked about this

0:39.4

before in this broadcast, especially with regard to J. I. Packer, who wrote in his book on

0:45.5

sovereignty and evangelism, this concept and idea that we have to, as theologians, adopt this

0:51.9

concept of an atenemy between the sovereignty of God and the free will of man or the responsibility of man, which we're going to look at.

1:00.9

Because what I think ultimately J.I. Packer argues is for this concept of theological double think.

1:08.8

And double think just means the power of holding two contradictory

1:11.4

beliefs in one's mind simultaneously and accepting both of them. We've talked about this before

1:17.7

when we confronted John MacArthur, who ultimately made the same kinds of arguments that

1:22.9

the concept of God's sovereignty and human freedom are friends, and they don't need to be reconciled because they're already friends and just don't try to even reconcile them because they're irreconcilable.

1:34.1

They're just, they're friends that you've just got to accept as being friends.

1:38.7

And so it's not an appeal, in my estimation, an appeal to mystery with regard to Calvinism.

1:44.0

It is an appeal to an atenemy or an apparent contradiction, a seeming contradiction.

1:49.8

As we'll see, I think, from this article, really from the book, Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God by J.A. Packer,

1:57.2

which is a very well-known book.

1:58.7

It's quoted quite regularly by Calvinists.

2:01.2

It's referred to quite regularly when talking about why do we evangelize if God is sovereign.

2:06.7

This is usually the go-to resource for Calvinists to maintain that evangelism is still a necessity

2:13.4

and still a part of the Calvinistic rule of view, as they'll appeal to Jay-I. Packer, who is
