From CNN, I'm Afamadika, with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, August 5th.

As Texas Republicans push for a new congressional map to protect the GOP's majority in the

House, so are California Democrats.

Sources tell CNN the map could flip five of Republicans' nine seats in California if voters

approve it in a November special election. Governor Gavin Newsom

says the plan would go forward if Texas accomplishes its redistricting effort. Whatever they are doing

will be neutered here in the state of California. He recognizes he's going to lose in the midterms,

and we have the opportunity, a de de de facto end the Trump presidency in less than

18 months. Some Texas state reps left the Lone Star State to prevent the House from having a quorum

to vote on the new map that would give Republicans as many as five more GOP controlled seats.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin told CNN yesterday that his party is going to fight fire with fire.

If they enact this map and they actually pass this into law, I would expect Democratic governors to put every single option they can on the table to respond in kind.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a, quote, productive conversation with President

Donald Trump over the phone today.
