We are here to destigmatize trash TV, destigmatize what's often referred to as women's television,

fluff television, trash garbage, caca, you name it. I'm Jolenta Greenberg, and I'm a comedian

and culture critic, and I will be serving as your

reality TV dramaturg.

A dramaturg is a researcher that gives background information on theatrical productions and helps

put dramatic works into cultural context.

And a reality TV dramaturg does that just for reality TV.

Here on Hot Masterpiece Theater, we talk about

how reality TV is just entertainment. Entertainment is just storytelling. And in storytelling,

it's formulaic. There are certain plot lines and kinds of characters that show up over and over again.

And we can see all of these elements in reality TV just as much as Shakespeare or Ibsen or

Edward Alby. You just have to look a little harder and be able to look past the reality TV

veneer, the plastic surgery, the wild personalities. And once you can look a little deeper,

you see that it is valid entertainment, valid storytelling,

just like good films or a night at the theater. And today we are continuing our journey
