Summary

Are you wondering how to build meaningful connections without drinking? Gregory once turned to substances to win fast friends. But that didn’t bring the deep, meaningful connections he really wanted. What he needed to realize, however, was that he had to connect with himself first, and reading This Naked Mind was the first step in the right direction. He took a leap of faith into a new way of life and never looked back. Since his last conversation with Annie on the podcast, he has been focused on his life and fitness goals, even becoming a CrossFit coach. In this “Where Are They Now” episode, Gregory and Hayley chat about the positive changes in his life and explore his journey toward building authentic relationships. In this episode, Hayley and Gregory will discuss: - Turning to substances to win fast friends - How This Naked Mind rocked his world - Truly connecting with himself - How drinking a lot can hinder connection - Having a good time without substances - Growing out of your comfort zone - The power of self-awareness - Gregory’s passion for health and fitness - Showing up for yourself even when it’s hard - Building authentic connections in a community - Why you need to be gentle with yourself - And other topics… Related Episodes: EP 410: Reader Question – Do I need to cut ties with my drinking friends?: https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-410-reader-question-do-i-need-to-cut-ties-with-my-drinking-friends  EP 109: Naked Life Story: Greg: https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-109-naked-life-story-greg/  Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. Annie, your story is so inspiring. There's so many layers, it's really neat as I go through these interviews and

0:36.7

there's so many different parts of people's stories that I'm able to relate to and that, right, so many of the members are able to relate to as well and you shared some really big golden

0:46.5

nuggets of wisdom so first of all I just want to say thank you for joining me today.

0:49.6

Thank you for having me I'm really excited to be here.

Awesome so so good. So you had mentioned a lot of social pressures and everything within high school and

1:01.6

I love the one line that you said it's interesting that people only half knew you.

1:06.2

Yeah, if I could just expand upon that I think for many of us

1:11.6

it's very important to recognize that drinking and any other substances that you're turning to.

1:16.8

They were the solution before they were the problem.

1:19.6

I know for me they were.

1:21.2

I think when you grow up sort of for myself I was definitely hiding

1:27.6

significant pieces of myself and it turns out that if you're looking to win fast friends I think in pretty much any

1:35.7

space do you know what you should do drink or do drugs and this is not to say by any means

1:41.7

that I made all fake friends throughout my high school and college experience like there were definitely authentic good people in there who cut through all that but if you're feeling a lack of acceptance and you want to win very surface-level friends and win acceptance, the circles that are going to be doing the same drugs as you or drinking, you'll have friends. It just probably is not going to penetrate into any kind of

2:06.6

meaningful thing that will last.

2:08.6

Yeah, 100%. And that's interesting because it reminds you of, I think it's at the end of your podcast when you're like,

2:14.0

you're not actually going to like some of you're afraid you have much.

2:17.0

Yeah, it's funny, I forgot that I said that, but that's a fact. I think I can point to different eras of my life and there's definitely

2:24.9

friends that have stood the test of time and the fabric of what was built

2:29.7

there was something beyond right but there's a decent number of people that when you put down,
