This is CBS, I On the World. I'm John Batchelor. I welcome my colleague Peter Berkowitz of the Hoover

Institution, writing his column most recently for Real Clear Politics, quoting William F. Buckley,

founder of the National Review, and now the subject of a very, very, very thorough biography by Sam

Tannenhouse. But I come to a quote that is more well known than Bill Buckley. The quote goes

like this. I would rather be governed by the first 2,000 people in the Boston Telephone Directory

than by the entire faculty of Harvard University.

That is about 60 years

before its time. Peter, a very good

evening to you. Mr. Buckley had

a very wonderful sense of humor.

However, part of humor

is that there is something in it.

That's what makes us chuckle and go,

well, what is it that Mr. Buckley

is pointing to in that famous quote? Good evening to you. Good evening. Well, what he was getting at,

what he understood himself to be saying, I believe, is that the Harvard University faculty is

intellectually corrupt and corrupting. How do we know that? Because he wrote a book

about 10 years earlier, early 1950s called God and Man at Yale. There's no suggestion that Yale

was differed from its elite partners in higher education. And the argument was that elite education, and not only at Yale, was teaching collectivism

in the form of statism at home and collectivism in the form of

or I should say atheism within the humanities,

and that this was undermining America at home
