This is Michael Cohen, and you're listening to the Mayakoba podcast. On Friday, President Biden's disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan continued its spiral into chaos

as thousands of desperate refugees fearful of Taliban retribution swarmed the airport

in Kabul, creating the specter of a humanitarian disaster unseen since the fall of Saigon nearly 50

years ago. With undeniable desperation, Afghans clung to a U.S. military plane as it took off today from Kabul

airport. Fleeing from the Taliban any way they could, at least two fell to their death.

On the ground, more pandemonium and gunshots. The Pentagon says U.S. troops shot and killed two armed Afghans in self-defense, as 6,000

forces will be used to airlift Americans out.

America's 20-year war is ending as it started, with the Taliban in charge.

Unfortunately, Biden's speech Friday maintained the defiant tone that has punctuated

his media appearances since the debacle began.

So what's happened? Afghanistan political leaders gave up and fled the country.

The Afghan military collapsed sometime without trying to fight.

If anything, the developments of the past week reinforced that ending U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan now was the right decision.

American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces

are not willing to fight for themselves.
