| 0:32.8 | Don't get me wrong, rules are great to keep us safe and have their place, but a lot of |
| 0:37.7 | innovation can happen when we challenge the status quo. |
| 0:41.7 | And I'll talk about a friend who helped open my eyes to the beauty of breaking and bending |
| 0:46.2 | the rules and how that changed my perception of the world. |
| 0:53.4 | And rules have two functions. One, version of rules are what I would call necessary rules. |
| 1:00.5 | When you see a red light you stop, and that's a rule that actually allows for the safe |
| 1:05.0 | and free movement of people throughout the world. |
| 1:07.3 | There's another set of rules though that are simply about the codification of norms, |
| 1:13.1 | that simply describe how we think people ought to behave. |
| 1:17.2 | That second category of rules can be highly subjective and can be based on assumptions |
| 1:23.3 | that don't make sense in a new and modern world. |
| 1:28.4 | And what innovators very often are are people who question that, who say, wait a minute, |
| 1:36.1 | that thing that we thought of as being the first kind of rule, a kind of necessary rule, |
| 1:40.2 | isn't a necessary rule, it's just a codification of a norm and we'd be better off without |
| 1:45.0 | it. |
| 1:46.0 | And I'd encourage to go ahead and break that rule. |
| 1:52.9 | One of the first great rule breakers I met in my life was the guy named Terry Martin, |
| 1:58.2 | in my little town in Little High School in Southwestern Ontario. |
