Careless People, the book written by Facebook insider Sarah Wynne Williams.

We are jumping right in, Chapter 27, title of which is Street Fighter Tactics. Now, let me tell you, if you're having a bad day and you just need a mood boost, chapter 27 is going to deliver that for you. I was kicking my feet. It all begins in February of 2015. When India decides we got a problem with internet.org.

The Indian government has an organization called Telecom Regulatory Authority, T-R-A-I for short.

It started looking into internet.org, which had already rolled out.

So they had like a billion users that they wanted in India out of

the four billion around the world that they were just salivating over. So India was always a top

priority. So hearing this, they're rattled. They're like, oh no, no, no, we got to keep India.

And this government agency wants to do like a public survey and ask four questions of the

public as to whether or not they think

internet.org should be banned. And when sponsor companies, really large companies in India,

hear what's going on. They start dropping like flies. So it's not looking good. So Cheryl is sending

optimistic emails, like pointing out any positives that she can. And Mark, he keeps telling the team to,

quote, go on the offensive against

governments. No one understands what that means, she says, but they know it's not something good.

So by August 2015, six months later, he assembles, she says, all of the senior men working on what's now

called, remember it was internet.org, and now it's called

Free Basics. And she recounts an incident where Mark gathered all the men working on that and

her. So yet again, she's the only woman in the room. And she says, Mark begins the meeting talking

about street fighter tactics. And he's gassing up Uber, pun intended, talking about all the things that Uber
