I'm the host Scott Feinberg and my guest today is one of the most interesting and

talented actors of his generation, a 61-year-old who burst onto the scene 21 years ago with a tiny

indie that he wrote, directed, and starred in, which brought him an Oscar for

best adapted screenplay to go with his Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and who hasn't stopped surprising and

impressing people ever since, Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton, who was born in

Arkansas and raised between there in Texas, came out west with dreams of becoming a musician, something

that he ultimately did with his band, The Box Masters, but not before many years of struggle

and hardship drove him towards acting and screenwriting as well.

After a period of sporadic unemployment and even homelessness,

he eventually began landing acting jobs on TV series

and then figured out that he could write better roles for himself than the sort others were offering him,

which he did starting with the 1992 film One False Move,

and then again with the movie that changed everything for him,

1996 is Slingblade.
