Summary

$1.6 trillion — that's how much student loan debt there is in the United States. Progressives want to cancel student loan debt. Republicans say that's wildly unfair. And President Joe Biden is....waiting. Playbook co-author Tara Palmeri and education reporter Michael Stratford discuss the fight on Capitol Hill over student loans and whether Biden could tackle the problem through executive action. So we're sort of an unprecedented time for federal student loans even

0:06.1

independent of this debate over whether they cancel it. There are some 40

0:11.2

million Americans of federal student loans. Federal student loan payments have

0:16.1

been on pause since March of last year and education department officials are

0:20.2

recommending that the White House, once again, extend the pause on federal

1:15.0

runway to start collecting payments again, but they're also grappling with the

1:19.2

gigantic promise Joe made on the campaign trail to wipe out student debt at

1:24.5

least partially. Remember when Biden said this about forgiving $10,000 per

1:29.4

borrower? They're in real trouble. They're having to make choices between

1:32.7

paying their student loan and paying the rent, post kinds of decisions. It should

1:36.2

be done immediately. Immediately, but this is Washington and there are politics
