In these highly-anticipated episodes of Mormon Stories Podcast, we interview David Bokovoy - one of Mormonism's leading Bible scholars. David has an MA from Brandeis University in Jewish Studies and a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East. He worked for the LDS Church Education System for 18 years, was chaplain at Harvard University, and taught LDS Institute at Harvard, Wellesley, and MIT. He is the author of 2 books including Authoring the Old Testament: Genesis-Deuteronomy, dozens of articles, and was a co-founder of the Mormon Interpreter with Daniel C. Peterson.

This interview focuses on David's personal faith journey, including his fascinating story of falling in love with the Hebrew language and deeply studying the Bible—to forgoing a possibly more lucrative academic career to move to Utah to teach in the Church Educational System.

0:05.1	starting with these episodes today. So basically first I want to introduce a
0:10.4	name to you that many of you will be familiar with but many of you will not.
0:14.6	David Bacavoy is one of the most important interviews I've ever done on Mormon stories,
0:19.4	definitely top 10.
0:21.2	David Bacavoy, you know, raised Mormon in San Diego. He has a master's from
0:26.9	Brandeis University and Jewish studies and a PhD in Hebrew Bible and the
0:32.2	ancient Near East, also from Brandeis. But what's really
0:36.1	interesting about David is in addition to being a true Bible scholar raised
0:40.3	Mormon, he also worked in the church education system for many many years, both as a seminary and
0:47.5	institute teacher, specifically Teaching Institute at Harvard and MIT, and then later moving to Utah and positioning himself to
0:57.0	become a professor of Hebrew and ancient Near East at BYU when his career was derailed and it's a fascinating story.
1:08.0	David is a brilliant special human and again one of the most important interviews I've ever done. Now when I
1:14.5	interviewed Dave I don't know six or seven years ago it was at a time when I was
1:18.6	chopping up interviews into one hour segments.
1:22.6	So I did a series on his Mormon story,
1:26.4	which was chopped up in I think four segments.
1:29.1	And then I did a series on applying higher scriptural criticism to Mormon scripture to the Old
1:37.2	Testament and Book of Mormon and that was I don't know three or four segments
1:41.8	as well.
