I welcome Tom Wayne Wright, the media editor of the economist, to help me understand a story

that spilled all over European media and all languages these last days and still is a

puzzle from the point of view of an American baseball fan.

It's called the super league or at least it was until it was still born with the energy

of such as Boris Johnson, the prime minister of Great Britain.

And as far as I can tell, millions of fans who pay money to attend football matches all

year long.

Tom, a very good evening to the super league.

I understand that it's gone, but what was the concept?

How was it to be organized and was it going to make money?

Good evening to you Tom.

Hi there, well it's good to be here.

And so the idea was that there were a dozen of the top teams in Europe, six of them from

England and three years from Spain and Italy.

And they were going to be breaking away and forming a league of their own.

And they said that there were going to be 15 teams in total eventually that would compete

in the league every year and there'd be another five spots every year for the teams that

could qualify competitively.

And you ask, was it going to make money?

I mean, the idea was that this was going to make absolutely loads of money.
