Summary

God’s ways are little and slow, i.e. they are a mustard seed. Mustard seeds appear insignificant, powerless, imperceptible, and defeated. Few of us signed up to lead in this way. I surely did not! Yet Jesus pleads with us to resist the big, powerful, and sensational ways of the world and embrace his way.

I'd like to introduce you today to a sermon message I gave several years ago called Becoming a Mustard Seed.

For those of us living and swimming in 21st century Western culture, even Christian culture, this is perhaps one of the more important or most

important truths of Jesus that we've got allowed to sink deep into the soil of our being.

This little truth, Jesus taught, he actually modeled it. It's powerful enough to change your life,

to shake the secular foundations of the way that we lead, the way that we see people and

circumstances and situations, the way we see that our goals and visions, and actually help us

relax, actually help us just walk in contentment, and actually build

something as leaders that's not wood hay or stubble, that actually is gold, you know, precious

stones. It's going to last, you know, beyond our lives. You know, Jesus said that the kingdom of

heaven is like a mustard seed which a man took

and planted in a field, and though it's the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it's the largest

of garden plants and becomes a tree. So the birds of the air come and perch on its branches. So in this

message I'm going to talk about just a few main points about this tiny

imperceptible seed.

Its power, it appears so insignificant.

And again, Jesus was speaking into a culture where people expected big and dramatic.

And Jesus saying, you know, the kingdom's imperceptible.

And it seems so powerless.

Jesus sure didn't look powerful, especially next to Herod.

And it's involved suffering in this dormancy of mustard seeds that break open.

And the kind of suffering involved in suffering in mustard seed being and leadership.
