Hey friend, it's Kristen. Grab your scriptures and let's dive into Genesis chapter 4, verse 9.

So after Kane killed his younger brother Abel, the Lord, who already knew what had happened,

asked Kane where his brother was.

And Kane replied, am I my brother's keeper? I recently researched the meaning of the original

Hebrew word translated as keeper. It's, I can't write it out for you, but it's pronounced Shamar.

And one definition of Shamar is to keep, guard, protect, save.

As soon as I read that definition, I thought of my older sister.

She was a goalkeeper for our high school soccer team and she would do anything to guard

that goal.

In fact, we weren't too shocked when she came home after one game with a black eye.

She had thrown herself in front of an opponent's foot to protect the goal.

With this in mind, was Kane his brother's keeper?

Was he supposed to protect, watch out for, and guard his brother against spiritual or physical harm?

Absolutely.

Each of us within our homes, ward families, and neighborhoods should consider

ourselves keepers or shamar, willing to come to the rescue to protect those God has put in our

sphere of influence. After all, it's what the Savior did for you and me. So the takeaway of the day

and five words or less is, be a tenacious shamar.
