Summary

On today’s show, guest Jonathan Clark shares every STR host's worst night-Airbnb shut down his entire account with no warning-based on an issue with “reviews”. To Jonathan’s shock and dismay, it appeared Airbnb had cancelled his account with the justification being he had left a negative review for a guest. In addition to his account being shut down, Airbnb told Jonathan all his future bookings were being cancelled, against his will, all coming into high season! Jonathan shares what his experience was like, how the Airbnb support was zero help, and how he believes they intended to chase him off until he gave up. By a stroke of luck Jonathan was able to get his account back, and he shares how he did so, and what he learned about Airbnb in the process. If you’re an STR owner, or considering being one, you can’t miss today’s show.

that we want to share with everybody else uh we're going to be talking about what happened, why it happened, what he did, and where we're at now. So hopefully all of us can avoid falling into the same situation and having the same experience. So Jonathan, thanks for me and when they come on the show, man. I appreciate it. Oh, no. It's my pleasure. And thank you for having me. And I got to tell you, based on my experience, I'm not even sure if it's something we can't avoid.

It was rather disconcerting.

1:01.5

It seemed almost completely random, to be honest.

1:04.7

So I can essentially tell you what happened, which is I've been an Airbnb host now since 2019. I've been slowly

1:15.8

transitioning from my main line of work, which is as a lawyer, to just becoming more and more

1:22.4

of an Airbnb host with these properties as I acquire more. Like many of us, I, you know, I've gotten quite into it.

1:30.5

I enjoy it.

1:31.4

It's in many ways quite fulfilling.

1:34.0

And I've invested a lot of time and effort into it.

1:37.6

So I've been a super host now, I think, for about three years.

1:41.7

So in any case, I actually woke up, as I often do, thinking about my

1:46.3

Airbnb. We're coming into high season here. Bookings have been going pretty well, all that.

1:52.5

And I logged in, and I was unable to. And I had a message that said, we've shut down your account because of, and what it said was

2:05.1

essentially an issue with my reviews. And I had no, like, the way they described it was

2:11.4

as if a review I left for someone else as a host caused some sort of issue. So that was the first

2:19.7

thing that confused me because I don't generally leave negative reviews for guests. I mean,

2:27.5

I probably hosted a thousand people at this, a thousand different groups at this point. And maybe I've left three to five bad reviews when

2:37.5

something's really bad, but mostly I try to just work it out with people directly. Let's pause

2:41.5

for a second there. What you're referring to is that a guest can leave a review on their,
