Bass Weight, doesn't matter? What does it mean?

I recently was looking through some posts on a site that is for through

hikers of a trail that I'm considering hiking in the next couple of years.

And somebody posted the magic question, what is the perfect bass weight?

I'm looking to hike this trail next July.

Can anybody help me on this? And I sat back and said, wow, I can't wait to see

the responses to pouring on this, the opinions and the advice and then the debates

that will go on.

However, I was pleasantly surprised after looking through 44 responses that

the majority of people were in agreement that you need to find a base weight

that's comfortable for you and that will keep you safe.

And there may not be a perfect base weight.

But first let's talk about what base weight means.

Base weight by definition is the weight of your gear, minus food fuel and

water.

It's your sleep system, your backpack, your tent, and all the accessories you
