On the morning of the 10th of May 1940, the Dutch skies opened to reveal dark clouds moving towards their cities. Hitler's promise to not attack the Netherlands had been an empty one.

The German military, and in particular the Luftwaffe, the aerial warfare branch of the

Wehrmacht army, had jealously desired to control the north and west coasts of Holland.

From there, the shorelines of Britain could easily be attacked, and similarly, it reduced the landing grounds available to Britain should it choose to mount a European offensive.

The Dutch first watched the giant German bomber, the KG4, as it violated their airspace and headed west.

As it passed them safely and flew out to see, many were relieved.

The bomber was obviously on some offensive mission across the water and had merely

mistaken the lands below.

But several miles out to sea, the KG4 turned around and flew menacingly back towards the naval airfields at Decoy.
