During the First World War, the Netherlands had successfully maintained an official stance of neutrality,

refusing to commit to the conflict upon either side.

This had served the country well in terms of post-war relations.

The Allied powers had no grievances as they had not been openly condemned by the Dutch government.

And on the opposite side, Germany had rewarded the Netherlands for staying their hand

by offering strong trade deals and business rates for Dutch businesses operating in their country.

But as the tensions of the late 1930s had escalated between its neighboring nations,

the Dutch government realized that they were going to have to make a decision once more about which part of the battle to side with.

The will of the people seemed to favor the allied powers.

Fascist movements had sprung up many times during the years, but had never caught fire among

the masses.

Similarly, hard-right groups that preached

of oppression or intimidation, based on creed or race, were viewed almost unanimously by the Dutch

people as bizarre. How could one base one's opinion on a person merely from looking at their
