Life, or some semblance of it, had to continue for the Dutch.

In the months following Hitler's betrayal of the Netherlands, the German war machine

invaded every small part of Dutch life, all the while in treating the Queen Wilhelmina

and her government to return and govern their people under Adolf Hitler.

But Wilhelmina and her cabinet knew that far more could be achieved on behalf of her people

by remaining outside, where foreign governments could be petitioned freely and where

anti-German activities could be coordinated.

The first act of resistance implemented by the Queen was a nightly broadcast across the sea

to her people using Radio Aranja, assuring her country that they had not been abandoned and

that efforts to liberate them from Nazi rule were underway.

Hitler is the arch enemy of mankind, she told them.

Be brave, and our enemies shall be defeated.

Impressed by Queen Wilhelmina's resilience and undying efforts on behalf of her people,

Winston Churchill openly declared her to be the only real man among the governments in exile.
