I was destroyed at the time, Audrey Hepburn said, when at the age of 56 she was asked about the day her father left home.

I cried for days and days.

My parents' divorce was the first big blow I had as a child.

I worshipped my father and missed him terribly from the day he

disappeared. Having my father cut himself off from me when I was only six was desperately awful.

If I could just have seen him regularly, I would have felt he loved me. But as it was, I always envied other people's fathers, came home with tears

because they had a daddy. My mother had great love for me, but she was not always able to show it.

Over the next few years, Joseph Hepburn was absent not just from Audrey's life, but from life in general.

In 1938, though, he resurfaced. For the preceding years, Joseph Hepburn had been working in Germany, using his devotion
