Summary

by Heather Robertson In this audio blog post, I talk to you about why the scale alone won't keep you motivated. It's so important that you get (and stay) motivated to achieve your weight loss goals, so you need to consider both extrinsic (like the scale going down) and intrinsic (like how you feel inside) motivators. Next week, I'll share another AudioBlog with you dealing even more with intrinsic motivation. So, is the scale all that motivates you? Please share your comments below!

Hi, I'm Heather and welcome to another half-size-me audio blog. Today's blog is, is the scale all that's motivating you? As we move through our lives, we must change. It is inevitable. In order to thrive and survive, change must occur. Yet, if you're like me, we like habits. We like what is comfortable. It is safe, but is it helping you be the best version of yourself that we could possibly be?

0:28.2

One amazing lesson I have learned in my quest to lose 170 pounds and keep it off is that change is exciting and it yields different results. I urge you to ask yourself periodically,

0:40.0

why am I doing these activities or behaviors? Because more than likely, you are doing them out of

0:46.6

habit and not necessarily because they benefit you or because you really want to. As I have said

0:53.2

on the show, they may not be the results you want,

0:56.5

but you will get something different when you make changes. Have you looked at your life periodically

1:01.7

to see what is stagnating, what is holding you back from bettering yourself or your situation?

1:07.8

I kind of did. I knew for a long time the one really unhealthy habit that I needed

1:13.0

to deal with was my relationship with the scale. I put it off for a really long time because I

1:18.7

falsely believed it made me feel better to know my weight at all times of the day. It was a false

1:24.0

sense of control. Was I in control or was it the scale? Was I making good choices

1:29.4

regarding my food and exercise or mindset because I wanted to or because of what I saw on the

1:34.1

scale? I have realized in this journey that where my life feels out of balance is an area I need to

1:40.0

focus on, and then I make changes. If it is extremely uncomfortable for me, then I know I'm

1:45.8

onto something. I also have to see what is motivating my choices. Motivation is defined as

1:52.0

internal or external drives and forces that energize, direct, and regulate behavior.

1:58.4

Motivation is often conceptualized in terms of direction, the behavior's

2:03.0

goals, intensity. Since deciding to maintain my weight and looking for a place of balance on the

2:09.2

scale and a mental balance, I have decided to focus on why do I choose or not choose to do certain

2:15.2

things. From attending my Weight Watchers meetings to workouts to the

2:19.1

foods I eat, the last few weeks I have set out on a quest to balance my relationship with my

2:24.6

bathroom scale. I realize how unhealthy this relationship has been up to this point, but I have not
