Summary

The Amateur Traveler talks to Italophile Ira Bernstein who returns to the show to talk about day trips in Tuscany that you can take from Florence. We talk about visiting the walled city of Siena and its famous bareback horse race the palio, viewing the many towers of San Gimignano, climbing the leaning tower of Pisa (after you take the obligatory picture of someone holding it up), and walking on the walls of Lucca. Each town has its own character and attractions. Arezzo has a jewelry museum and the home of the “Father of Humanism” Petrarch. Fiesole is a rich enclave, a suburb of Florence with views of the city and a roman theatre. Montepulciano and Montalcino are both known for their wines. Ira talks about some of the events that the locals enjoy like the palios, flea markets and flag throwing competitions. So even if you just get as far out of Florence as Piazzale Michelangelo there are many places to explore in Tuscany. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to the amateur traveler, I'm your host Chris Christensen. Before we get into

has taken some actions if you are not aware the safety record of major airlines in the U.S. over the last few years has been very, very good.

0:51.0

But the regional carriers, while still much safer than driving, have not

0:55.9

been as safe.

0:56.9

And so Congress has been beefing up their regulations in terms of pilot requirements for these regional carriers.

1:04.0

They're increasing the number of hours you need to be sitting in that left-hand seat.

1:08.0

They're also going to be decreasing the number of hours you can fly to take into account research in terms of pilot fatigue.

1:15.9

And their desire, obviously, besides getting reelected to Congress, is to increase the safety

1:20.3

of the regional carriers.

1:22.5

And then in another flying news story, you may remember last week we talked about a woman

1:26.4

who was suing the airlines because she did not get her luggage feedback when they lost her

luggage.

You'll be glad to know that when United Airlines lost an unaccompanied minor,

a nine-year-old boy for eight hours in Chicago's O'Hare airports,

1:39.2

they did return the $100 child care fee and isn't that comforting.
