Welcome to the politics guys. I'm Michael Barronowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University.

My co-host this week, as always, is Cleveland area attorney and sometime Republican strategist, Jay Carson.

Here's our Ask the Politics Guys question for this week, Jay.

It comes from Emily in Rice Lip, which is just outside of London, England. Wow. Yeah. So,

our international audience. That's pretty cool. That's a testament to the global reach of our program.

Absolutely. Absolutely. So here's what Emily has to say. Dear politics, guys, in what respect do you think that the two main parties still share any similarities?

And do you agree that the academic consensus that the Republicans moving to the right was the

main impetus for Democrats moving to the left? Or was it something else that caused this polarization?

So what do you think, Jal? You take a first crack at this one?

I would say, first of all, that the parties, I think, do agree on a great deal of things.

You just tend not to hear about it that much.

I think there's a general agreement.

And, again, I'll frame my answer a little bit differently because this is a question

coming from the U.K. That both parties, I'll frame my answer a little bit differently because this is a question coming from the UK.

That both parties, I think, are committed and pretty much locked into some variation of a regulatory slash welfare state.

Now, again, some Republicans may bristle at that and say, oh, we don't know.

Sure, sure will, yeah.

But look, no one has ever seriously proposed getting rid of Social Security or Medicare or Medicaid.

No one seriously proposes that we ought to get rid of the EPA.
