Dr. Berg talks about why people love chocolate.

There are many natural compounds in chocolate that wake you up and enhance your mood. The first one is phenylalanine which is the precursor to dopamine. This is a neurotransmitter that has the capacity to give you the pleasure sensation. Phenylalanine also increases noradrenaline which makes you feel awake.  Then, there is theobromine which is caffeine-like and can increase mental clarity. Your liver does filter it out over time but if your liver is damaged, it can stay in the body longer and prevent sleep. Lastly, we have tryptophan which turns into serotonin. This hormone can increase the state of well-being.  Also, do sugar-free chocolate, but not maltitol, which includes xylitol, erythritol, inulin, monk fruit, and stevia.
