Magazine. I am joined today by the writer Sophie Lewis. She is the author of the book's

a manifesto for care and liberation,

which we are here to talk to her today about.

thank you for joining us on current affairs.

Well, thank you very much for having me, Nathan. Great to be here. I want to frame the conversation with a quote from the

1976 Republican Party platform. Families must continue to be the foundation of our nation.

Families, not government programs, are the best way to make sure our children are properly nurtured,

our elderly are cared for, our cultural and spiritual heritages are perpetuated, our laws are observed,

and our values are preserved.

It is imperative that our government's programs,

actions, officials, and social welfare institutions must never be allowed to jeopardize the family.

We fear the government may be powerful enough to destroy our families. We know that it's

not powerful enough to replace them. Now, I thought of starting by asking you what's wrong

with the family, but actually, I want to start with the thing that is the subtitle of your book.

Your book is a manifesto for care and liberation. In fact, the word care was mentioned in that

quote, I just read, the family as the institution that makes sure people are cared for. Could you start by telling us,
