I want to start with the concept of misogyny

because getting us to a clear concept of misogyny

is very important in your book.

When people are accused of being racist,

they often say things like,

I'm not racist, I don't hate anybody.

And I think with misogyny,

the same thing happens.

I can't possibly be a misogynist.

I don't hate or despise women.

And you argue that in some ways it is correct not to think of misogyny as hatred of women.

And you try and get us to a more accurate and helpful definition of the term.

What you point out is that it's true that misogynists often don't consciously hate women,

but that doesn't mean we don't have a society saturated with misogyny.

And so let's start with how you think we should conceive of the idea of misogynia.

So I think it might be helpful to think of misogyny as existing, even if there's no misogynist.
