Summary

Leaning into archetypes can provide comfort, but relying on them too much can take us out of the present moment. Dora explains how to find that balance.  Dora Kamau holds a B.A. in Psychology and a B.S. in Psychiatric Nursing. She is a certified Mindfulness Meditation teacher and is working to complete her Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Teacher training this fall. Before joining forces at Headspace, Dora worked as a psychiatric nurse in a women’s addictions facility and organized community events for BIPOC women in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Hello, Sam here. Welcome to Radio Headspace and to Friday.

0:20.3

Have you ever thought of yourself as a magician? What about a warrior? A king or a queen?

0:29.5

What if I told you that we have all of these characters and more within us, helping us to make decisions?

During a recent coaching session, I was talking about how I tend to respond to a behavior

0:43.7

that I find annoying with my partner. I told my coach that I tend to shut down or distance

0:49.5

1:40.0

archetypes helps us to access inner resources that we didn't even know we had.

In graduate school, my professor showed us a video of motivational speaker Tony Robbins leading a

1:52.4

discussion between an Orthodox Jewish man and a Muslim man hours after they got word about what

1:58.9

happened on 9-11. His intention was to help them have an honest discussion about thoughts and

2:04.8

feelings surrounding their religious and political beliefs, and their work with the archetypes allowed

2:10.7

them to access empathy and true connection. They became really good friends and even co-founded a

2:17.1

peace organization. Tony asked them to speak from different parts of themselves using four archetypes.

2:25.2

The four he used were the magician, warrior, sovereign and lover. They represent distinct
