Summary

It’s never too late to make a change; Annie Mac has left Radio 1 after 17 years of broadcasting and is ready to embrace parts of her identity she hasn’t had time to explore until now.

In this chat with Fearne, Annie talks about feeling that we need to allow people to be more than one thing - that we need to embrace the sunshine and joy, but the darkness and sadness too.

Fearne and Annie also think about the notion of having endless space out in front of you and why, although scary, it might be positive to allow time to exist without plans.

Annie’s debut novel, Mother Mother, is out now, and her podcast Changes is available to listen to on your favourite podcast app.

Hello and welcome to Happy Place. I'm Fern Cotton and this is the show that gives you

0:06.9

permission to define yourself through your own eyes, not other peoples. Today I get a

0:12.9

chat to a former colleague of mine, It's Annie Mack.

0:16.9

People could not see me, the public persona of me, as someone who would write a book like

0:22.9

this. They were like, where's the memoir? Where's the music? We can't compute this. And

0:29.1

I felt angry and frustrated at the time because I was like, didn't know what this is me. Why

0:34.3

can't you see that? It's okay to want to go out and dance like a lunatic and listen to

0:40.5

really loud music, but also to want to express yourself and write sad stories. You can do both.

0:47.6

In April 2021, Annie announced she'd be leaving Radio 1 after 17 years of broadcasting.

I actually had this chat with Annie about a month before her last show, so there was

0:57.5

a lot of anticipation and unknowns about what no longer being on the station would feel

1:02.7

like for her. But what an exciting moment to get to redefine yourself as the person you

1:08.0

want to be. We don't necessarily have to quit the job we've been doing for decades

1:12.7

to do that, but there's a lot in here about how we can all do a bit of reclaiming our

1:18.1

own identities on our own terms. Very important.

1:21.7

For the most part, Christmas is super fun and it's all about embracing the joy, but I

1:29.5

know that for precisely those reasons, it can also be a very tricky time for a lot of

1:34.1

people and it brings up a lot of different feelings for all of us as well. We want to make

1:39.7

sure that you're feeling as sparkly as you'd like to this festive season. So, over on the

1:46.3

Happy Place app, we've pulled together a Christmas survival guide where you can find especially

1:52.4

curated collection of practices to help with any and all emotions you might be feeling

1:58.7

at the moment. You might want to calm your mind with a beautiful meditation or maybe you're
